I just started reading Knights Errant and totally bingeread all of it over several days and I love it! Is there any way you could specify the meanings of clay and ash? I can tell they're derogatory (and slurs?), and I know clay refers to Kadeen+Wilfrid's race/religion, but the meaning of ash was less clear to me? If the Margrave's religion is a parallel of Christianity/Catholicism, and Wilfrid's to Islam, is Beppe's former one to Judaism? Sorry if this has already been explained and I missed it!

No worries - thanks for asking (and for reading!) Short answer - you’re correct about all the parallels:

Ibra’ma - Christianity
Jehedda - Islam
Asharda - Judaism

‘Clay’ is a pejorative used to refer to brown people regardless of their faith, but it’s a racist assumption that they’re all Jeheddan. The term originates from Jehedda’s creation myth (people were molded from clay, etc etc). ‘Ash’ isn’t always derogatory when used within the Ashardan community but when used by people like the Margrave, it is intended to be.

This falls outside of your question, but some background: the three major religions in K-E are based on Abrahamic religions, but the religions in K-E are not monotheistic. All three religions draw from the same pantheon but believe different stories about them. The pantheon is largely based off of Abraham (Ibra in K-E’s world), Sarah (Asha), and Hagar (Jey). Ibramites follow Ibra, Ashardans follow Asha, Ibra’s first wife, and Jeheddans follow Jey, Asha’s servant/Ibra’s 2nd wife.

Also, while characters say “oh my god” - that’s not to indicate that they only believe there’s one god, rather they’re referring to their main god.
